History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Diana, Princess of Wales. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Diana, Princess of Wales died in 1997, and this crown was struck in her memory. A royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 17 November 1998, in force the next day, ordered £5 coins in gold, silver and cupro-nickel "to commemorate Diana, Princess of Wales". It was published in the London Gazette of 30 November 1998 beside the proclamation for the Millennium crown.

The Royal Mint's 1999-2000 annual report says the coin was issued through banks and post offices, and that issues of the Diana and Millennium crowns together reached about five million by the end of March 2000. The Mint added that it did not expect them "to appear in circulation in significant numbers, if at all". Its striking table gives 5,396,300 crowns for 1999, covering both designs, the highest yearly figure for any £5 crown in that table.

David Cornell designed the reverse: a portrait of Diana with the dates 1961 and 1997, the years of her birth and death, the circumscription IN MEMORY OF DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES and the value FIVE POUNDS.

The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen, introduced on the £5 the year before, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D and the date. The proclamation gives a grained, or milled, edge.
