History and design
The Royal Albert Hall marked its 150th anniversary in 2021, and the Royal Mint issued this £5 crown for the occasion. The Mint says it was the first time the hall had been honoured on an official UK coin.
The coin was authorised by a royal proclamation given at Windsor Castle on 11 November 2020, in the same document as the Alfred the Great £5 issued that year. It covered gold, standard silver, silver piedfort and cupro-nickel versions.
The cupro-nickel coin was sold as a Brilliant Uncirculated piece in its own display packaging. The Royal Mint's 2021 sales page lists 8,550 coins and 7,492 more in trade packaging, 16,042 in all. That is ahead of the 10,883 sold of the Alfred the Great coin authorised alongside it, and a little behind the 17,184 of that year's White Greyhound of Richmond.
The reverse is by Anne Desmet RA, an artist the Royal Mint describes as an expert in architectural artwork. The proclamation describes it simply as a depiction of the Royal Albert Hall, with the inscription ROYAL ALBERT HALL and the dates 1871 and 2021.
The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II with ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 5 POUNDS 2021. The cupro-nickel coin has a milled edge. The gold and silver coins have a plain edge with the incuse inscription INSPIRING ARTS AND SCIENCES, which makes a lettered edge a quick way to spot a precious-metal coin.
Collecting notes
The most unusual versions are the domed proofs. The Royal Mint says the domed silver proof was the first UK coin to feature a convex surface, recreating the hall's domed roof on the coin. It sold 2,035, more than the 1,544 flat silver proofs, and the domed gold proof sold 199 against 169 flat ones. There were also 850 silver piedforts.
The Brilliant Uncirculated coin is flat. Check the architectural detail and the field around the building for handling marks.
