History and design
In 2021 Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to celebrate a 95th birthday, and the Royal Mint marked it with this £5 crown. It continued the run of birthday crowns that included her 90th in 2016.
The design was authorised by a royal proclamation given at Windsor Castle on 11 November 2020, in versions running from the cupro-nickel crown to a 9.5 kilo gold coin, of which the Mint sold one. The cupro-nickel coin came in a fold-out wallet of images from The Queen's 95 years.
It was the most popular crown of 2021. The Royal Mint's sales page lists 23,984 Brilliant Uncirculated coins, 41,700 in trade packaging, 2,083 coin and stamp sets and 9,525 Premium Pack coins, 77,292 in all. That is close to the 84,376 sold of the 90th birthday coin five years earlier.
The reverse is by Timothy Noad, whom the Royal Mint describes as a heraldic artist, and the Mint calls it a posy for The Queen, a floral tribute from the four nations of the UK. The proclamation describes the floral emblems of the United Kingdom with the Royal Cypher and the inscription MY HEART AND MY DEVOTION 1926 2021, the year of her birth and the year of the anniversary.
The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait with ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 5 POUNDS 2021. The standard coin has a milled edge. The gold and silver proofs have a plain edge lettered FULL OF HONOUR AND YEARS, the same inscription used on the precious-metal 90th birthday coins.
Varieties and errors
The Premium Pack coin, sold only by the Royal Mint, has a waved milled edge with 95 mills, one for each year of The Queen's life. Its maximum mintage was 9,500. It came with six National Portrait Gallery postcards. Check the edge to tell it from the standard coin. No mint errors are documented.
Collecting notes
More than half the base-metal coins were sold in trade packaging rather than the fold-out wallet. Check the open field around the posy for marks.
The silver proof sold 7,567, with more in trade packaging and stamp sets, against a maximum mintage of 9,405. There were also 1,923 silver piedforts and 654 gold proofs.
