History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Little Miss Sunshine. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Mr. Men books by Roger Hargreaves began in 1971, and for their 50th anniversary the Royal Mint issued three £5 crowns in 2021, the first time Mr. Men Little Miss characters had appeared on UK coins. Little Miss Sunshine was the third and final coin, following Mr. Happy and a shared coin for Mr. Strong and Little Miss Giggles.

The Royal Mint launched it with the presenter Jenni Falconer and put it on sale on 4 May, exclusively through the Mint. The Little Miss Sunshine book itself dates from 1981. All three designs were authorised in one royal proclamation given at Windsor Castle on 10 February 2021.

The Mint sold two cupro-nickel versions: a plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin, with 8,796 sold plus 7,250 in trade packaging, and a coloured one with 8,947 sold. Leaving trade packaging aside, it was the lowest seller of the three Mr. Men coins in both finishes in the Mint's figures, behind Mr. Happy (10,460 plain, 10,182 coloured) and Mr. Strong and Little Miss Giggles (8,948 plain, 9,051 coloured).

The reverse was drawn by Adam Hargreaves, Roger Hargreaves's son and now the main author and illustrator of the books. The proclamation describes it as Little Miss Sunshine with the inscription LITTLE MISS 50 YEARS and the signature of Roger Hargreaves. On the coloured coin the character is printed in yellow.

The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II with ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2021. The edge is milled.
