History and design
The Welsh Dragon £5 is the Wales coin in The Four Nations: Coins for a Kingdom, a range of £5 base proof crowns sold only at The Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant. The Royal Mint's Experience page announced that the 2024 range "will launch from February, starting with The Welsh Dragon design", which made this the first coin of that year's run.
Like the Scotland and Northern Ireland coins, it reuses a design by Norman Sillman from the round pound. The dragon first appeared on the £1 in 1995 and again in 2000. Both were struck in large numbers for change: the Royal Mint's figures give 34,503,501 Dragon £1 coins for 1995 and 109,496,500 for 2000.
The design on a £5 with the King's portrait was authorised by a proclamation in force from 16 February 2023. The £5 crown was not issued into change, and the Mint has published no mintage, sales figure or issue limit for it.
The proclamation describes the reverse as a dragon passant, being the King's Badge for Wales, with the inscription FIVE POUNDS. The dragon stands above the denomination.
On the 1995 and 2000 £1 the edge carried the Welsh inscription PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD. The £5 has no edge lettering: the proclamation gives it a grained edge, the Royal Mint's milled edge.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date.
Collecting notes
A base proof is a proof-quality striking in cupro-nickel, and proof surfaces show handling easily. Look for an example that has stayed in its original packaging.
The coin was sold at the visitor centre rather than as a standard online release. The rest of the range includes the Scottish Lion £5 and the Four Nations £5, which uses Gregory Cameron's design of four heraldic beasts.
