History and design
The Four Nations £5 is the United Kingdom coin in The Four Nations: Coins for a Kingdom, a range of £5 base proof crowns sold only at The Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant. The Royal Mint describes five coins, one for the UK and one for each of its countries. Four reuse Norman Sillman's 1990s £1 designs; this fifth coin, in the Mint's words, features "the original design that appeared on the final 'round pound' released in 2016".
The design had already been used on a Royal Mint Experience £5 under Queen Elizabeth II. A 2020 proclamation authorised it on a cupro-nickel £5, and the Mint's 2022 sales page lists 2,965 of The Four Nations 2022 £5 base proof coins sold as an Experience exclusive. A proclamation in force from 16 February 2023 carried the design over to the King's portrait.
The Mint has not published a mintage, sales figure or issue limit for the King Charles III coin, and it was never issued into change.
The reverse is by Gregory Cameron, who designed the Last Round Pound of 2016. The proclamation describes it as a lion, a unicorn, a stag and a dragon surrounding a crown, with the inscription FIVE POUNDS. In the Four Nations range it is the coin that, as the Royal Mint puts it, celebrates the UK as a whole.
On the crown the edge is plain milled, which the proclamation calls a grained edge.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date.
Collecting notes
A base proof is a proof-quality striking in cupro-nickel, and proof surfaces show fingerprints and hairlines easily. An example still in its original packaging is the safest choice.
The catalogue lists this coin with dates from 2023 to 2025, so check the date on the obverse against the one you want. The 2022 Four Nations £5 with the late Queen's portrait is the earlier version, and the design itself began on the Last Round Pound.
