Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one. Its silver content is worth about £1.68 at today's spot price, which puts a floor under its value.

How can I tell a Maundy threepence from a currency threepence?

Before 1927 the two used the same design, so it is difficult. Tony Clayton says the depth and quality of striking is the best clue, and Wikipedia notes that Maundy dies had a more highly polished field. Heavily worn coins are usually currency pieces.

How many Edward VII threepences were made?

Coin Hunter's figures for circulation total about 45.4 million over the nine dates, from 8,268,480 in 1902 down to 3,152,160 in 1906. On top of these came a few thousand Maundy pieces each year, about 8,800 sets in 1906 and 1,983 in 1909 according to CoinVarieties.

Is the Edward VII threepence silver?

Yes. It was struck in sterling silver, 92.5 percent fine, as the Royal Mint's Maundy set pages confirm for the Maundy pieces. British silver coins kept that standard until 1920, when the fineness was cut to 50 percent.

What happened to silver threepences at decimalisation?

Tony Clayton and Wikipedia both record that silver threepences of the Maundy design were revalued at three new pence when the currency was decimalised in 1971, rather than being treated like the brass threepence, which ceased to be legal tender on 31 August 1971.

How do I identify the 1902 3 Pence - Edward VII incl. Maundy?

Check the weight 1.41g and diameter 16mm and the metal (92.5% silver) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The silver threepence did two jobs under Edward VII. It was an ordinary circulating coin, issued in every year of the reign, and it was also one of the four pieces in each year's Maundy set. Until 1927 the currency and Maundy threepences shared one design, which is why the catalogue treats them as a single entry.

Coin Hunter's figures for the currency coins run from 8,268,480 in 1902 to 3,152,160 in 1906, the lowest date, and total about 45.4 million. Maundy pieces added only a few thousand a year. Wikipedia records that until 1908 Maundy sets could be ordered through banks, while from 1909 they went only to recipients and officials, and CoinVarieties gives 1,983 sets for 1909.

The obverse carries George William de Saulles's bare head of the King, which the Royal Mint credits on its Edward VII Maundy pages, with the legend EDWARDVS VII D G BRITT OMN REX F D IND IMP.

The reverse is a crowned figure 3 within an oak wreath, with the date. Wikipedia credits this wreath design to Jean Baptiste Merlen in 1822, with the crown altered by Leonard Charles Wyon in 1888. The coin was struck in sterling silver, 92.5 percent fine.

Collecting notes

Telling a Maundy threepence from a currency one is the main challenge. Clayton points to the depth of striking, and Wikipedia to the more polished fields of Maundy dies. Clayton also notes that Maundy pieces after 1820 rarely turn up in worse than very fine condition, so heavy wear points to a currency coin. Maundy threepences given to poorer recipients were often spent, and Wikipedia notes they are scarcer today than the other Maundy values.

The 1902 coronation year also brought matt proofs, which CoinVarieties notes were issued in sets marking the new reign. The Edward VII Maundy fourpence and the other Maundy values have their own pages.
