History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Olympic Handover. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
At the end of each Olympic Games the next host city is recognised in a handover ceremony. This £2 marks the handover from London to Rio de Janeiro, which took place at the London 2012 closing ceremony on 12 August 2012. It is the second handover £2: the first, dated 2008, marked the passing of the Games from Beijing to London.
The design was set by a royal proclamation given at Windsor Castle on 10 July 2012. The Royal Mint's figures record 845,000 struck for circulation, the seventh lowest circulating £2 total in those figures. Only the four 2002 Commonwealth Games coins and the 2015 Britannia and Royal Navy coins are lower, and the Royal Mint places this coin seventh in its own list of the rarest £2 coins.
The reverse is by Jonathan Olliffe. It shows a relay baton being passed from one hand to another, with the Union Flag and the flag of Brazil joined together behind the hands. The proclamation describes the background as a running track motif. The London 2012 logo sits above, and the inscription LONDON 2012 RIO 2016 runs around the design.
The edge is milled with the incuse inscription I CALL UPON THE YOUTH OF THE WORLD, the same words used on the 2008 handover coin.
The obverse carries the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. Because the reverse does not state a value, the obverse legend includes the denomination: ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF TWO POUNDS 2012. The coin has a nickel-brass outer ring and a cupro-nickel centre.
