History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Mary Rose. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Mary Rose £2 marks 500 years since the maiden voyage of the Mary Rose, the warship completed at Portsmouth in 1511 for Henry VIII. She served in the king's navy until 1545, when she sank in the Solent during an action against a French invasion fleet.
The coin's design and specifications were set by a royal proclamation given on 13 October 2010, and the coin was announced publicly in February 2011 with a display at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth. The Royal Mint's mintage figures record 1,040,000 struck for circulation. Only ten circulating £2 coins in the Mint's published figures have a lower total, among them the King James Bible £2 of the same year at 975,000.
The reverse is by John Bergdahl. It shows the ship in profile, with flags and banners streaming from her tall masts and her guns visible, and is based on the only contemporary painting of her. The ship sits inside a cartouche carrying THE MARY ROSE above and TWO POUNDS below, with a rose to the left and to the right.
The lettering on the reverse is in the Lombardic style used on the coins of Henry VIII. The edge is milled with the incuse inscription YOUR NOBLEST SHIPPE 1511.
The obverse carries the fourth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the date 2011. The date is on this side because the reverse has none.
