History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – King James Bible. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The King James Bible £2 marks 400 years since the publication of the King James Bible in 1611. The translation was begun in 1604 for the Church of England. The coin's design and specifications were set by a royal proclamation given on 13 October 2010, the same day as the proclamation for the Mary Rose £2 coin, also dated 2011.
The Royal Mint's mintage figures record 975,000 struck for circulation. That is one of only ten circulating £2 mintages below one million in the Mint's published figures, and a little lower than the Mary Rose coin at 1,040,000.
The reverse was designed jointly by Paul Stafford and Benjamin Wright. It focuses on the opening verse of St John's Gospel, IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, and shows it twice. On the left the words appear as printing blocks, raised and in mirror image as type has to be. On the right they appear as the printed page, the right way round and recessed into the surface. The lettering is a replica of the black letter typeface used in the first edition.
Above the verse is the inscription KING JAMES BIBLE and below it the dates 1611 and 2011. The edge is milled with the incuse inscription THE AUTHORISED VERSION.
The obverse carries the fourth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Because the reverse does not state a value, the denomination TWO POUNDS is placed on the obverse beneath the portrait.
