History and design

This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Act of Union. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

England and Scotland had shared a monarch since 1603, when James VI of Scotland became James I of England. They were joined under one Parliament in 1707 through the Acts of Union, creating the Kingdom of Great Britain. This £2 coin, dated 2007, marks the 300th anniversary.

The royal proclamation for the coin came into force on 11 October 2006. It made the cupro-nickel and nickel-brass coin current and legal tender throughout the United Kingdom and provided for silver, silver piedfort and gold versions.

The Royal Mint's figures record 7,545,000 struck for circulation. That places it among the more plentiful commemorative £2 coins: of the 35 commemorative issues with a figure in the Mint's data, only five have a higher total.

The reverse is by Yvonne Holton. It divides the coin into four quarters, with a rose and a thistle in two of them and a portcullis in each of the other two. The whole design is overlaid with a linking jigsaw motif and surrounded by the dates 1707 and 2007 and the denomination TWO POUNDS. The Royal Mint explains the rose and thistle as England and Scotland, the portcullis as Parliament and the jigsaw as the interconnection of the two nations.

The milled edge carries the incuse inscription UNITED INTO ONE KINGDOM. The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF.
