History and design

This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Abolition of Slave Trade. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1807. This £2 coin, dated 2007, marks its bicentenary. The royal proclamation for the coin came into force on 15 November 2006 and describes the event as the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire.

The proclamation made the cupro-nickel and nickel-brass coin current and legal tender throughout the United Kingdom, and provided for silver, silver piedfort and gold versions. The Royal Mint's figures record 8,445,000 struck for circulation. Of the 35 commemorative £2 issues with a figure in the Mint's data, only two have a higher total.

The reverse is by David Gentleman. It shows the date 1807 with the 0 drawn as a broken chain link, surrounded by the inscription AN ACT FOR THE ABOLITION OF THE SLAVE TRADE and the date 2007. The Royal Mint describes the broken link as representing the end of the transatlantic slave trade, and the coin as honouring the abolitionist movement led by figures such as William Wilberforce.

The milled edge carries the incuse inscription AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER. Because the reverse has no denomination, the words TWO POUNDS were added to the obverse, around the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, after the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF.
