Common questions
How much is the 2015 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Magna Carta worth?
Verified sold prices for the 2015 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Magna Carta run from £3.09 to £15.61 across 4 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
How many Magna Carta £2 coins were made?
The Royal Mint's mintage figures record 1,495,000 struck for circulation, all with the fifth portrait of the Queen. Eleven circulating £2 coins in the Mint's figures have a lower total, so it sits among the lower-mintage designs without being one of the scarcest.
Why are there two versions of the 2015 Magna Carta £2?
Two proclamations set the design. The first, in October 2014, gave the obverse legend used with Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait. The second, in June 2015, gave a new legend for Jody Clark's fifth portrait. Check Your Change records the fourth-portrait coin as sold in sets only and the fifth-portrait coin as the circulating issue.
Who designed the Magna Carta £2?
John Bergdahl designed the reverse, which the Royal Mint says is inspired by medieval imagery. The circulating coin carries the fifth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, which the Mint dates from 2015.
What does the edge of the Magna Carta £2 say?
The milled edge carries the words FOUNDATION OF LIBERTY in incuse letters. The wording is fixed by the royal proclamation for the coin, and the Royal Mint describes it as a reference to the charter's lasting influence on ideas of freedom and justice.
Is the Magna Carta £2 legal tender?
Yes. The proclamation for the coin made the cupro-nickel and nickel-brass version current and legal tender for any amount throughout the United Kingdom. The bimetallic £2 has not been withdrawn, so the coin can still turn up in change.
How do I identify the 2015 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Magna Carta?
Check the weight 12g and diameter 28.4mm and the metal (bimetallic: copper-nickel center in nickel brass ring) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Magna Carta £2 marks 800 years since King John sealed the charter in 1215. The Royal Mint describes Magna Carta as a document widely regarded as a foundation of liberty and the rule of law, a phrase echoed on the coin's edge.
The coin exists with two different portraits of the Queen because 2015 was the year the portrait changed. A proclamation of October 2014 set the design with the legend used alongside Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait. A second proclamation, given on 10 June 2015, repeated the reverse and edge but set a new obverse legend for the fifth portrait.
This is the fifth-portrait coin, the one struck for circulation. The Royal Mint's figures record 1,495,000, and eleven circulating £2 coins in those figures have a lower total. It was more than double the 650,000 of the other 2015 commemorative, the Royal Navy £2.
The reverse is by John Bergdahl and, in the Royal Mint's words, is inspired by medieval imagery. King John stands at the centre holding the charter in one hand and a quill in the other. He is flanked by a churchman and a baron, standing for the clergy and the barons who sought to limit the power of the crown.
MAGNA CARTA appears above the figures and the dates 1215 and 2015 below. The edge is milled, with FOUNDATION OF LIBERTY in incuse letters.
The obverse carries the fifth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. Because the reverse has no statement of value, the obverse carries both the denomination and the date, as TWO POUNDS and 2015.
Varieties and errors
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The Rank-Broadley version is not an error. It is a separate issue, catalogued here as the fourth-portrait Magna Carta £2, and Check Your Change records it as included in sets only. The Royal Mint's FAQ also makes clear that edge lettering can read either way up in relation to the Queen's head, because the inscription is rolled onto the blank before striking. An "upside-down" edge is normal.
Collecting notes
Start with the portrait. Jody Clark's effigy, with the short legend ending F · D, identifies the circulating coin. The older portrait, with the legend ending FID · DEF, identifies the set coin.
Then check that the edge inscription is complete and that the centre sits squarely in the outer ring. The proclamations also provide for silver, silver piedfort and gold versions, the gold with a plain lettered edge.
The coin remains current. Its companion from the same year, with a far lower mintage, is the Royal Navy £2.
