The 2014 £2 marks 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. The Royal Mint describes it as the first coin in a five-year series tracing the war from its outbreak to the armistice. Its subject is the 1914 recruitment campaign led by Lord Kitchener, which raised one of Britain's largest volunteer armies.
The Royal Mint's figures give 5,720,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2014. That is higher than the other commemorative £2 of the year, Trinity House, at 3,705,000, and well below the 18,200,000 Technology £2 coins of the same date.
The reverse is by John Bergdahl. It is based on the wartime recruitment poster showing Lord Kitchener facing the viewer and pointing, with the slogan YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU.
The edge inscription reads THE LAMPS ARE GOING OUT ALL OVER EUROPE. The obverse carries the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. Because the reverse has no statement of value, the denomination is on the obverse: the legend ends with the words TWO POUNDS. The coin is bimetallic, with a nickel-brass outer ring and a cupro-nickel centre.
Varieties and errors
A mule of this coin is recorded and is catalogued separately as the Kitchener £2 mule. It pairs the normal Kitchener reverse with an obverse die that has no denomination, so the words TWO POUNDS are missing from below the portrait and the coin does not state its value anywhere. Coin Hunter records the mule's obverse legend as ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF, against ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF TWO POUNDS on the normal coin.
The first example to be sold publicly was offered by Lockdales on 28 March 2020. The lot description says it had been authenticated by the Royal Mint Museum, with accompanying letters, and that the number struck was unknown. No public Royal Mint statement on the error was found, and the sources disagree about which die was used. Change Checker suggests, as a possibility only, an obverse die from the Trinity House £2 coin, which carries its denomination on the reverse.
Nothing is recorded as wrong with the Kitchener side. A coin with TWO POUNDS on the Queen's side is the normal issue, whatever a listing calls it.
Collecting notes
Check the obverse first, since that is the only place the mule differs. Then check that the edge inscription is complete and that the centre is properly seated in the outer ring.
The normal coin entered circulation in the millions and remains current. Coin Hunter records that it was also sold in Brilliant Uncirculated packs, and the site lists a silver proof, a silver piedfort and a gold proof. Those collector versions share the design but were not made for circulation.
