Trinity House was established by Royal Charter under Henry VIII in 1514, with the task of improving the safety of Britain's waterways. The Royal Mint describes it as having served mariners for 500 years by maintaining lighthouses and other navigational aids and supporting maritime welfare and training. This £2 marks that anniversary.
The design was set by a royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 6 November 2013, published alongside the proclamation for the year's other commemorative £2, the First World War Kitchener coin. The Royal Mint's figures record 3,705,000 Trinity House coins struck for circulation, against 5,720,000 of the Kitchener coin. Eighteen circulating £2 issues in the Mint's figures have a lower total.
The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Joe Whitlock Blundell in collaboration with David Eccles. It shows a lighthouse enclosed within a depiction of its own lens. Around it are the name TRINITY HOUSE and the dates 1514 and 2014, with the denomination TWO POUNDS.

Change Checker suggests, as a possibility, that a Trinity House obverse die was left in the press when Kitchener production began. That error is catalogued separately as the Kitchener £2 mule. A Trinity House £2 with no denomination beside the portrait is normal.
Collecting notes
On an example, check that the lines of the lens are still distinct and that the edge inscription is complete. The date is on the reverse only.
The proclamation made the base-metal coin current and legal tender, and the bimetallic £2 has not been withdrawn. Collector versions were struck as a silver proof, a silver piedfort and a gold proof, each listed separately on this site. The gold coin has a plain edge with the same incuse lettering.
