Common questions
How much is the 1995 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – World War II worth?
Verified sold prices for the 1995 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – World War II run from £1.73 to £9.00 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
How many 1995 Peace (dove) £2 coins were made?
No official figure exists for this design alone. The Royal Mint published 6,056,506 for the two 1995 designs combined. Change Checker lists 4,394,566 for the dove coin, and Check Your Change says the figure is thought to be about 5,000,000 with conflicting information giving a lower number.
Why is there no date on the 1995 dove £2?
The design has no date on either face. The proclamation specifies only the Queen's portrait, her titles and TWO POUNDS on the obverse and a dove on the reverse. The dates appear on the edge, which reads 1945 IN PEACE GOODWILL 1995.
Who designed the 1995 dove of peace £2?
John Mills designed the reverse, a stylised dove as the symbol of peace. He also designed the 1996 football £2. The obverse carries Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Elizabeth II, the Royal Mint's standard £2 obverse for 1990 to 1997.
What does the edge of the 1995 Peace £2 say?
It reads 1945 IN PEACE GOODWILL 1995 in incuse letters on a milled edge. Check Your Change attributes the words IN PEACE GOODWILL to Winston Churchill. The Royal Mint used a longer form, IN VICTORY MAGNANIMITY IN PEACE GOODWILL, on its 2005 £2 for the 60th anniversary.
Is upside-down edge lettering on the dove £2 an error?
No. The Royal Mint says £2 edge inscriptions are rolled onto the blank before the faces are struck, so the lettering can face either way relative to the Queen's head. It states that there is no right or wrong way.
How do I identify the 1995 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – World War II?
Check the weight 15.98g and diameter 28.4mm and the metal (nickel brass) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
Two commemorative £2 coins were issued in 1995, and this is the one for the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. A royal proclamation of 24 November 1994 authorised it in gold, silver and nickel brass and made it legal tender for any amount. Like the other single-metal £2 coins of 1986 to 1996, it was issued to mark an occasion and not for general circulation.
The Royal Mint published one figure for both 1995 designs together, 6,056,506 struck to circulating standard, without a split. Collector references agree that the dove coin accounts for most of it. Change Checker lists 4,394,566, while Check Your Change says the figure is thought to be about 5,000,000 and notes that conflicting information gives a lower number.
The reverse is by John Mills. The proclamation describes it in one phrase: a stylised representation of a dove as the symbol of peace. Tony Clayton's reference notes that the dove carries an olive branch, and there is no lettering or date on this side at all.
The obverse has the portrait of Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, with ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F D and TWO POUNDS below, and it is undated too. The only dates are on the milled edge, which reads 1945 IN PEACE GOODWILL 1995 in incuse letters. Check Your Change attributes the words to Winston Churchill. The coin is nickel brass, 28.4mm across, with a standard weight of 15.976g.
Varieties and errors
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
Two normal features are sometimes mistaken for faults. The absence of a date on both faces is part of the design, as the proclamation shows. Edge lettering that reads upside down against the Queen's head is also normal: the Royal Mint says £2 edge inscriptions are applied to the blank before striking and can face either way.
Collecting notes
This is the commoner of the two 1995 coins on every published estimate, well ahead of the United Nations £2. Because the faces carry no date, the edge is the quickest way to confirm what a coin is, so check that the inscription is complete and legible.
The Royal Mint says the old single-metal £2 coins are legal tender but that most banks and retailers will probably refuse them. The design was also struck as a gold proof, a silver proof and a double-weight silver piedfort, listed separately. The proclamation gives the gold coin a plain edge with the same incuse inscription, where the silver and nickel-brass coins have a milled edge.
