History and design
The United Nations was established in 1945, in the aftermath of the Second World War, and its 50th anniversary fell in 1995. The Royal Mint marked it with a commemorative £2, the second of two issued that year. The first, for the 50th anniversary of the end of the war, had been authorised the previous November; this one followed in a royal proclamation of 8 February 1995, in gold, silver and nickel brass.
The proclamation made the nickel-brass coin legal tender for any amount, but it was a commemorative and not a general circulation coin. The Royal Mint published a single figure for both 1995 designs, 6,056,506 struck to circulating standard, and never split it. Collector references put the United Nations coin at well under a third of that: Change Checker lists 1,668,575 and Check Your Change says about 1,750,000 or slightly fewer.
The reverse is by Michael Rizzello. In the proclamation's words it shows the fiftieth anniversary symbol of the United Nations and a fanning pattern of flags, with the inscription NATIONS UNITED FOR PEACE above and the dates 1945-1995 below. The inscription turns the organisation's name around to state its purpose.
The obverse has the portrait of Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, with ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F D and TWO POUNDS below. The edge is milled and has no inscription. The coin is nickel brass, 28.4mm across, with a standard weight of 15.976g, the same specification as the other single-metal £2 coins.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The lack of edge lettering is not a fault. Four of the seven single-metal £2 designs have an inscribed edge, including the other 1995 coin, but the proclamation gives this one a milled edge only.
Collecting notes
On the published estimates this is the scarcer 1995 coin by a wide margin, and among the single-metal £2 coins it sits close to the 1994 Bank of England issue. Exact rankings are not possible, because the Royal Mint's figures combine it with the dove of peace £2.
On an example, look at the fine lines of the flags and the anniversary symbol, and check the milling. The Royal Mint says the old single-metal £2 coins are legal tender but that most banks and retailers will probably refuse them. The design was also struck as a gold proof, a silver proof and a double-weight silver piedfort, each with a milled edge, and these are listed separately.
