History and design
The Royal Observatory £2 marks 350 years since the observatory at Greenwich was founded. The Royal Mint describes it as commissioned by King Charles II in 1675 and as the first state-funded, purpose-built scientific institution in Britain, dedicated to improving navigation at sea and timekeeping.
The design was fixed by a royal proclamation of 6 November 2024 and shown publicly on 27 December 2024 as one of five commemorative designs in the 2025 Annual Sets, which went on sale on 2 January 2025. The other £2 in the set marks 200 years of the modern railway.
This is a collector coin. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, which list no £2 of any design dated 2025, and the Mint has published no figure for the Brilliant Uncirculated version.
The reverse is by Henry Gray. The Royal Mint says it shows the Shepherd Gate Clock, the constellation Ursa Minor, the star Polaris and the Prime Meridian drawn on a globe. Around the design run THE ROYAL OBSERVATORY and GREENWICH, with the dates 1675 and 2025.
The edge carries PERFECTING THE ART OF NAVIGATION in incuse letters. The Mint says the words are taken from the Royal Warrant signed by Charles II in March 1675.
