History and design

This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Charles III HMS Beagle. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The HMS Beagle £2 marks 200 years since the first voyage of HMS Beagle. The Royal Mint calls Beagle one of the most important vessels in the history of exploration and discovery. She made three voyages, and is best known for the second, whose passengers included Captain Robert FitzRoy and the naturalist Charles Darwin. Change Checker dates the start of that voyage to 1831.

The design was fixed by a royal proclamation of 15 October 2025, and the coin was revealed on 2 January 2026 as one of two £2 coins in the 2026 Annual Sets. The individual coin followed in spring 2026. The Mint says it was created in collaboration with Royal Museums Greenwich.

This is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and no figure for the Brilliant Uncirculated version has been published.

The reverse is by William Webb, who also designed the 2025 £2 for 200 years of the modern railway. It shows the ship, with her sails furled according to Change Checker, inside a border made up of a selection of the animals Darwin studied during the second voyage. The only inscription on this side is HMS BEAGLE.

The edge carries THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE in incuse letters. The obverse has the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date.
