History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Charles III 200 years of Zoological Society of London. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The ZSL £2 marks 200 years of the Zoological Society of London, which the Royal Mint says was founded in 1826 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles "for the advancement of zoological science". The Mint describes ZSL today as a conservation charity working in more than 70 countries, and says this is the first time it has appeared on an official UK coin.
The design was fixed by a royal proclamation of 9 July 2025. It was revealed on 2 January 2026 as one of two £2 coins in the 2026 Annual Sets, and the individual coin was launched on 14 April 2026 at London Zoo, where a two-metre wooden replica was given to the Sumatran tigers. Part of the proceeds from each sale goes to ZSL.
This is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and no figure for the Brilliant Uncirculated version has been published.
The reverse is by Jonathan Olliffe and was created in collaboration with ZSL. It brings together a Sumatran tiger, a Socorro dove and a Partula snail, three animals the Mint links to some of the society's most significant conservation programmes. Bamboo grasses wind between them as a nod to the habitats ZSL works to protect. The inscription reads 1826 ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF LONDON 2026.
The edge carries RESTORING WILDLIFE TOGETHER in incuse letters. The obverse has the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 2 POUNDS and the date.
