History and design
In 1797 Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint in Birmingham struck the large copper 'cartwheel' penny and twopence under a government contract, with the twopence weighing two ounces. Alongside the ordinary coins, Soho produced proofs, some given a bronzed surface. The Royal Mint Museum holds a bronzed proof twopence of 1797 (RMM 1280), recorded in the Mint's collection catalogues of 1874 and 1906, weighing 57.11 g with a plain edge.
This entry is catalogued as a pattern, but the piece carries the design and date of the issued coin. It is a special striking rather than a trial of a new design, and it was not issued as currency.
The design is that of the circulating twopence, the work of Boulton's engraver Conrad Heinrich Küchler. The obverse has the laureate, draped bust of George III facing right, with the legend GEORGIUS III.D:G.REX sunk into the broad raised rim and Küchler's initial K on the drapery. The reverse shows Britannia seated on a rock with olive branch and trident, a ship behind, and SOHO below the shield, with BRITANNIA and the date 1797 on the rim.
Collecting notes
Clayton lists the proof copper twopence in a variety of forms and records late strikes made by Boulton in several metals, as well as restrikes by W. J. Taylor, who bought the dies in 1848. Any bronzed example should be matched to its Peck class before being called an original Soho proof. The circulating coin is the cartwheel twopence.
