History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Menai Bridge. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
From 2004 to 2007 the round pound left heraldry behind for four years. Each coin showed a bridge from one part of the United Kingdom: the Forth Railway Bridge for Scotland in 2004, the Menai Bridge for Wales in 2005, the Egyptian Arch for Northern Ireland in 2006 and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge for England in 2007. The Royal Mint describes the series as symbolic of unity and inspired by Britain's industrial heritage.
The Menai coin is by far the most plentiful of the four. The Royal Mint's figures give 99,429,500 struck for circulation, against 39,162,000, 38,938,000 and 26,180,160 for the other three. Only six round £1 dates from 1983 to 2015 have a higher figure, and none of those falls between 2001 and 2014.
Like every round pound, it lost its legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The reverse is by Edwina Ellis, an Australian-born wood engraver who designed all four bridge coins. A 2003 Daily Post report says she won a competition judged by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee. It shows the Menai Bridge inside a border of railings and stanchions, with ONE POUND beneath.
The bridge carries the road across the Menai Strait between Anglesey and mainland North Wales. The same report gives its opening as 1826, its designer as Thomas Telford and its main span as 579 ft, with the deck 100 ft above the water.
The bridge pounds have no edge inscription. The milled edge carries an incuse decorative pattern that the Royal Mint describes as symbolising bridges and pathways. The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley.
