History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Forth Bridge. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
After two cycles of plants and heraldry, the round £1 turned to engineering. From 2004 to 2007 each year's pound showed a different bridge, in a series the Royal Mint says was created to celebrate the excellence of British engineering. The first was Scotland's coin, with the Forth Railway Bridge.
The Royal Mint's figures give 39,162,000 struck for circulation. Among the bridge pounds that is second to the 2005 Menai Bridge at 99,429,500, and just ahead of the 2006 Egyptian Arch at 38,938,000 and the 2007 Gateshead Millennium Bridge at 26,180,160. Across all 41 round £1 entries in the Mint's figures, 22 are lower.
Round pounds were replaced by the 12-sided £1 from 28 March 2017 and lost their legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The reverse is by Edwina Ellis. The Royal Mint describes it as a representation of the Forth Railway Bridge inside a border of railway tracks. The Mint calls the bridge a cantilever railway bridge connecting Edinburgh with Fife. It opened in 1890 and was designed by John Fowler and Benjamin Baker.
Ellis designed all four bridge coins. She studied at the National Art School in Sydney and became a jewellery designer and then a printmaker, working mainly in wood engraving. "I love designing coins. There's a freedom to designing within a shape that has rounded or no corners," she told the Royal Mint in a later interview.
The edge broke with tradition. In place of a Latin or Welsh motto, the Royal Mint lists a decorative pattern symbolising bridges and pathways, making this the first round pound in its design table without an edge inscription. The obverse has Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Elizabeth II.
