History and design
This is a collector version of the 1 Pound - Elizabeth II – Egyptian Arch Bridge. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The 2006 pound is the third of four round pounds that each show a bridge from one part of the United Kingdom. Scotland's Forth Railway Bridge came first in 2004 and the Menai Bridge for Wales in 2005. The Egyptian Arch stood for Northern Ireland, and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge closed the series for England in 2007.
The Royal Mint calls the series symbolic of unity and says that Ellis abandoned the traditional heraldic approach for designs inspired by Britain's industrial heritage.
The Royal Mint's figures give 38,938,000 struck for circulation. That is within 224,000 of the Forth coin (39,162,000), far below the Menai coin (99,429,500) and above the Gateshead coin (26,180,160). Round pounds lost their legal tender status at midnight on 15 October 2017.
The reverse is by Edwina Ellis, the wood engraver who conceived the bridge series. The Royal Mint describes it as a representation of the Egyptian Arch Railway Bridge inside a border of railway station canopy dags. The words ONE POUND run beneath. Each bridge coin has its own border: railway tracks for the Forth, railings and stanchions for the Menai, struts for Gateshead.
The Royal Mint credits the arch to Sir John Macneill. The proclamation for the coin places it in County Down, and Check Your Change gives the location as Newry and the completion date as 1851.
There is no edge inscription. The milled edge has an incuse decorative pattern, described by the Royal Mint as symbolising bridges and pathways, and shared with the other three bridge coins. The obverse has Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II.
