History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Girlguiding. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Girlguiding began in the United Kingdom in 1910. The Royal Mint's account is that Agnes Baden-Powell started it at the request of her brother Robert, who had founded Scouting in 1907, as a movement run on the same principles for girls. The 50p for its centenary followed three years after the Scouting 50p of 2007.

The royal proclamation for the coin was made on 15 October 2009 and came into force the next day. It ordered the coin in cupro-nickel, silver, silver piedfort and gold, all dated 2010.

The Royal Mint's figures give 7,410,090 struck for circulation. That is close to the 7,710,750 of the Scouting coin, and more than any other commemorative 50p in the Mint's figures between then and 2015: the next highest is the 2013 Christopher Ironside coin at 7,000,000. The 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, issued the year before, had only 210,000.

The reverse is by Jonathan Evans and Donna Hainan. The proclamation describes it as a repeating pattern of the current identity of Girlguiding UK, which was the trefoil. The Mint explains the trefoil as the emblem of the movement's threefold promise.

The inscription CELEBRATING ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF GIRLGUIDING UK accompanies the pattern, with the denomination 50 PENCE. Because the value is on the reverse, the obverse has only the Queen's titles and the date 2010 around the fourth portrait, by Ian Rank-Broadley. The edge is plain.
