History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Woolly Rhinoceros. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Woolly Rhinoceros 50p is the second of three coins in the Royal Mint's Ice Age Giants collection, all dated 2024 and all produced with the Natural History Museum. It follows the Steppe Mammoth and comes before the Giant Deer, which the Mint calls the third and final coin.

The Mint describes the woolly rhinoceros as one of the largest mammals of the Pleistocene, living in the same environment as the woolly mammoth. It looked much like the modern African white rhino, but with a thick mane and a double-layered wool coat that kept it warm in temperatures as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the Mint sold the Woolly Rhinoceros only as a commemorative coin. No mintage has been published for the base metal version.

Palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls designed the reverse, as he did for all three coins in the collection, with guidance from palaeobiologist Professor Adrian Lister of the Natural History Museum. The Mint says each design is based on scientifically accurate reconstructions. The proclamation describes this one as a depiction of a woolly rhinoceros accompanied by the inscription COELODONTA WOOLLY RHINOCEROS.

The Mint's notes on the animal single out its horns. It had two, one of which could reach 1.3 metres and was flattened into a V shape, which is thought to have helped it search for food in the snow.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
