History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Tyrannosaurus. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Tyrannosaurus 50p, dated 2024, opened a three-coin dinosaur collection that the Royal Mint produced with the Natural History Museum. The Stegosaurus followed as the second coin and the Diplodocus completed the set. The Mint counts it as the third collection in its Tales of the Earth series, after the 2020 dinosaur coins and the 2021 Mary Anning coins.

The Mint says the design is based on a Tyrannosaurus jawbone specimen held at the museum. According to the Mint, the first known remains were found in Wyoming by the fossil hunter Barnum Brown in 1900, and the bones were sold to the museum in the 1960s.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the Mint sold the Tyrannosaurus only as a commemorative coin. No mintage has been published for the base metal version.

The reverse is by palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, who designed both earlier Tales of the Earth collections. The proclamation describes a depiction of a Tyrannosaurus Rex with the inscription TYRANNOSAURUS CRETACEOUS.

Nicholls told the Mint that the brief changed for this set. The period in which the animal lived replaced the name of the scientist who described it, a whole skeleton replaced the single fossil shown on earlier coins, and he swapped the plants at the sides for a hint of the animal's environment.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
