History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III The Winged Keys. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Winged Keys 50p, dated 2024, returned Harry Potter to the 50p after the Royal Mint's four earlier designs dated 2022 and 2023. It was made in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, and the Mint's packaging for it explores the theme of friendship in the stories. A second 2024 coin, The Black Lake, followed it.

The coin marks a scene from Harry's first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in which he takes to a broomstick to catch a winged key.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the Mint sold the Winged Keys only in collector packaging and in precious metal. No mintage has been published for the standard base metal coin.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Its product page says the design is an original illustration, remastered for the coin by Bella Biggs, a product designer at the Mint. The proclamation describes it as the character Harry Potter riding a broomstick, attempting to catch a flying key, with the inscription THE WINGED KEYS.

The Mint's design list credits the four earlier Harry Potter 50p coins to Jim Kay and Ffion Gwillim, so the 2024 coins carry a different credit.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
