History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III The Snowman. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Royal Mint has issued a Snowman 50p for Christmas every year since 2018, and the 2024 coin was the seventh. It was launched on 14 October 2024 in collaboration with Snowman Enterprises and under licence from Penguin Ventures, and it was the second Snowman coin to carry the portrait of King Charles III.

The coin celebrates Raymond Briggs's wordless picture book The Snowman, first published in 1978, and the animated film first shown on Channel 4 on 26 December 1982.

The Mint's launch statement was explicit about its status: this is a collectable coin and would not be entering general circulation. It does not appear in the Mint's circulating mintage figures, and no mintage has been published for the standard base metal coin.

The reverse is by Robin Shaw, an animator and illustrator who was art director on the sequel film The Snowman and The Snowdog and who has drawn the Snowman coins for several years. It shows The Snowman placing a star at the top of a Christmas tree. The proclamation describes it in the same terms and gives no inscription for the reverse.

Shaw said of it that the coin "captures the magic of Raymond Briggs' most enduring creation".

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
