History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III The Black Lake. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Black Lake 50p is the second Harry Potter 50p dated 2024. The Royal Mint presented it as the follow-up to the Winged Keys coin and made it, like that coin, in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products.

Its subject comes from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts he competes in the Triwizard Tournament, and the second task takes him into the waters of the Black Lake. The Mint says the design celebrates his courage and bravery in that task.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the Mint sold the Black Lake coin only as a collector piece. No mintage has been published for the standard base metal coin.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Warner Bros. Its product pages say Bella Biggs, a product designer at the Mint, remastered a stylised illustration of Harry in the depths of the lake. The proclamation is more specific about what is happening: it describes Harry Potter being captured by three Merpeople, accompanied by the inscription THE BLACK LAKE.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
