History and design
The Steppe Mammoth 50p is the first coin in the Royal Mint's Ice Age Giants collection, three 50p coins dated 2024 about large mammals of the Pleistocene. The Woolly Rhinoceros followed as the second coin and the Giant Deer closed the set. The designs and packaging were produced with the Natural History Museum.
The subject is Mammuthus trogontherii, the predecessor of the woolly mammoth. The Royal Mint describes it as one of the largest mammals of the Ice Age, with an average shoulder height of 4 metres and a weight of around 10 tonnes.
This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the Mint sold the Steppe Mammoth as a commemorative coin in Brilliant Uncirculated, silver proof and gold proof editions. It has published no mintage for the base metal coin.
The reverse is by palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, who also drew the Mint's earlier dinosaur 50p coins. The Mint describes it as a scientifically accurate reconstruction, made with guidance from palaeobiologist Professor Adrian Lister of the Natural History Museum. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of a steppe mammoth accompanied by the inscription MAMMUTHUS STEPPE MAMMOTH.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The standard coin came in a Royal Mint pack with educational packaging written for all ages, including younger readers. Because it was not issued for circulation, a typical example is still in that pack or has been removed from one. Check a loose coin for handling marks, since a coin that has been carried or spent no longer has an uncirculated finish.
A colour-printed Brilliant Uncirculated version was sold alongside it, and the Mint also offered the three coins of the collection together by subscription. The precious-metal versions share the design: the Mint's pages give limited edition presentations of 500 silver proof coins, 2,500 colour silver proof coins and 35 gold proof coins.
