History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III RNLI. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has been saving lives at sea since 1824, and its 200th anniversary fell on 4 March 2024. The Royal Mint marked it with a 50p, unveiled on 28 December 2023 as one of five commemorative designs in the 2024 Annual Set. The sets went on sale on 2 January, and the coin was launched on its own on 5 February 2024.

At the launch the Mint said it would give each of the 238 RNLI lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland a coin of its own, and that a percentage of the price of every coin sold would go to the charity.

The coin was not issued for circulation. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint has published no sales figures for 2024 coins.

The reverse is by John Bergdahl, an experienced coinage artist whose earlier work includes designs for the Coronation of King Charles III. It shows the RNLI flag encircled by a lifebuoy, with the inscriptions 200 YEARS and 1824 2024. Bergdahl, who grew up in a dockland area and is a keen angler, said the charity was "a subject close to my heart".

His design began as a plaster model. The Mint's craftspeople scanned it to make a 3D file, and product designer Daniel Thorne refined it to fit a 50p without losing detail.

The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with his titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
