History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Red Arrows. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Red Arrows 50p celebrates the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, 60 years after its first display season in 1965. The Royal Mint revealed the design on 27 December 2024 as one of five commemorative coins in its 2025 Annual Set, which went on sale on 2 January 2025. The coin was then launched on its own on 6 February 2025.

The Mint's account of the team's history says the Red Arrows first performed for the press on 6 May 1965 at RAF Little Rissington, and that by the start of 2024 they had flown nearly 5,000 displays in 57 countries. The Folland Gnat they began with was replaced by the BAE Systems Hawk T1 for the 1980 season.

This is a collector coin. It is not in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, which list only the Atlantic Salmon 50p for 2025.

The reverse is by Nigel Tudman at Tuch Design. It shows the underside of three Hawk T1 aircraft in close formation with their trails behind them, and the proclamation gives the inscription as RED ARROWS. Tudman has said that early concepts had the jets diving and that the Royal Mint Advisory Committee suggested they fly upwards, overhead. He also tried formations of nine, seven and five aircraft before settling on three. The Royal Mint's Emma Noble modelled the final design.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.
