History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Giant Deer. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Giant Deer 50p is the third and final coin in the Royal Mint's Ice Age Giants collection, after the steppe mammoth and the woolly rhinoceros. All three are dated 2024 and were developed with the Natural History Museum. The designs were authorised by a royal proclamation that came into force on 3 October 2024, and Coin Hunter records the Giant Deer going on sale on 2 December 2024.

The collection looks at the large mammals of the Pleistocene and what has been learned from their remains. It followed the Mint's three dinosaur 50p coins earlier in the same year and uses the same artist.

This is a collector coin. It is not in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint sold it as a commemorative coin in a pack. No sales figures have been published.

The reverse is by the palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, working with the Natural History Museum and with expert guidance from the palaeobiologist Professor Adrian Lister. The Mint describes it as a scientifically accurate reconstruction. The inscription gives the animal's scientific and common names: MEGALOCEROS GIANT DEER.

The Mint's notes explain the choice of pose. The giant deer had the largest antlers of any known animal, living or extinct. Only adult males grew them, shedding them in spring and regrowing them in time for autumn and winter, and their size meant the animal kept to flat plains, grassland and lightly wooded country.

The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with his titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
