History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Queen's 90th Birthday. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

In 2016 Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to reach a 90th birthday, and the Royal Mint describes this £5 crown as the only official UK £5 coin for the occasion. It follows the crowns for her 70th birthday in 1996 and her 80th in 2006.

The coin was set out in a royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 8 October 2015, which ordered it in platinum, gold, silver and cupro-nickel. The cupro-nickel version was sold as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin in a display folder, since crowns had not been struck to a circulating standard since 2008.

The Royal Mint's 2016 sales page lists 74,195 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 10,181 more sold in tubes, 84,376 base-metal coins in all. No other cupro-nickel £5 was issued for 2016; the year's other crown, for the Battle of the Somme, appears on the sales page only as a silver proof.

The reverse is by Christopher Hobbs, described by the Royal Mint as a painter, sculptor and illustrator, and the Mint says The Queen approved the design herself. The proclamation describes it as a crowned Royal Cypher above the number 90, encircled by roses.

There are nine roses, one for each decade of her life. Hobbs took his lead from The Queen's love of flowers and, treating a birthday as a more personal occasion than a state event, filled the classical wreath with natural roses rather than heraldic ones, each drawn differently.

The obverse carries Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 5 POUNDS 2016. The cupro-nickel coin has a grained edge. The platinum, gold and silver coins have a plain edge with the incuse inscription FULL OF HONOUR AND YEARS.
