History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Queen Mother. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
This crown marks the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. It is also the coin that changed the crown's value. On 28 March 1990 the Chancellor, John Major, told Parliament that the Queen had approved a special £5 crown for the birthday, with "a normal version of the coin issued at face value" and collectors' versions in precious and base metal sold at a premium.
The Royal Mint gives 4 August 1990, the Queen Mother's birthday, as the date the £5 crown was first issued. It says the face value was raised from 25p because £5 was "more consistent with the weight and size of the coin". The last crown before it was the 1981 Royal Wedding piece.
The Mint's striking figures give 2,761,431 cupro-nickel coins struck to circulating standard. That is above its figures for the crowns of 1993 (1,834,655), 1996 (2,396,100), 1997 (1,733,000) and 1998 (1,407,300). In the Mint's table of £5 crowns only 1999, 2000 and 2002 show higher yearly totals, and each of those years had two designs.
Leslie Durbin designed the reverse. The Royal Mint describes it as a cypher of the letter E in duplicate above a Royal Crown, flanked by a rose and a thistle, all within the inscription QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER and the dates 1900-1990. No portrait of the Queen Mother appears, unlike the crowns made for her 80th and 100th birthdays.
The obverse carries the portrait of Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, used on the £5 from 1990 to 1997. The edge is milled.
