History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Queen Mother. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother died in her sleep on 30 March 2002, aged 101. On 9 April her coffin was taken on a gun carriage from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, with thousands lining the streets. A royal proclamation given at Windsor Castle on 26 June 2002 ordered a £5 coin to commemorate her, in gold, silver and cupro-nickel.
It was the fourth crown to honour her. The Royal Mint's list of crown designs includes coins for her 80th birthday in 1980, her 90th in 1990 and her 100th in 2000, followed by this one, which the Mint calls the Queen Mother Memorial Crown.
The Royal Mint does not publish a separate striking figure for the coin. Its table of crowns struck to circulating standard gives 3,469,243 for 2002, a year with two designs: this one and the Golden Jubilee crown. Among the £5 years in that table only 1999, at 5,396,300, is higher.
The reverse is by Avril Vaughan, who also designed the 1996 crown for the Queen's 70th birthday. It shows a portrait of the Queen Mother encircled by a wreath, with the circumscription QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER and the dates 1900-2002.
The obverse carries the portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with her titles and the value FIVE POUNDS. No separate date of issue appears on the coin: the only dates are those of the Queen Mother's life.
The proclamation specifies a plain edge bearing, in incuse letters, the three words STRENGTH, DIGNITY and LAUGHTER, each separated by a representation of a royal crown.
