History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Queen Mother 100th Birthday. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother turned 100 on 4 August 2000. A royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 24 November 1999 ordered £5 coins in gold, silver and cupro-nickel "in celebration of the one-hundredth year" of the Queen's mother. The Royal Mint Advisory Committee completed its choice of design with the formal approval of a model by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley.

The Royal Mint's 2000-01 annual report says the crown was issued through banks and post offices from the end of June, shortly before the birthday, and that the number issued exceeded two million. It contrasted the crown with the Public Libraries 50p of the same year, which could be "expected to circulate freely". The Mint's striking table gives 3,147,092 crowns for 2000, a total shared with the Millennium crown.

The reverse shows the Queen Mother's portrait flanked by celebratory groups of people, with the inscription QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER, the dates 1900-2000 and FIVE POUNDS. Below the portrait is a representation of her signature, Elizabeth R. The Mint's report describes the scene as a portrait "with cheering crowds in the background".

Ian Rank-Broadley also made the portrait of the Queen on the obverse, so both sides are the work of one artist. The proclamation gives the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.F.D., the date, and a grained, or milled, edge.
