History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II Golden Wedding. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The crown marks the Golden Wedding of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who married on 20 November 1947. The Royal Mint's 2001-02 annual report records that on their 1997 visit to the Mint the Queen and the Duke celebrated the anniversary by striking the first Golden Wedding crowns in gold. The Royal Collection holds that first gold specimen, which it dates to the visit of 9 May 1997 and describes as part of an issue limited to 2,750.

The Mint's striking figures give 1,733,000 cupro-nickel crowns struck to circulating standard in 1997, the only crown design of the year. That is below the 1990, 1993 and 1996 crowns, and above only the 1998 Prince of Wales crown (1,407,300) among the £5 crowns of the 1990s.

This is the one modern crown of the decade without a standard portrait of the Queen. Philip Nathan's obverse shows the conjoined, draped busts of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh facing right. The Royal Collection Trust reads the inscription as ELIZABETH . II . D . G . REG. F. D . PHILIP . PRINCEPS, so the Duke is named on the coin beside her.

Leslie Durbin, who designed the first £5 crown in 1990, designed the reverse. The Royal Mint describes a pair of shields, chevronwise: on the left the shield of the Royal Arms, on the right the shield of Prince Philip. Above are a Royal Crown and the date 20 NOVEMBER, and below an anchor cabled and FIVE POUNDS. The Trust's record adds the years 1947 and 1997 above the arms.
