History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II Diamond Wedding. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947. Sixty years on, the anniversary was marked with a £5 crown, authorised by a royal proclamation given at Buckingham Palace on 10 October 2006 for coins in platinum, gold, silver and cupro-nickel.

It follows two earlier anniversary crowns in the Royal Mint's list: the 1972 Silver Wedding coin and the 1997 Golden Wedding coin.

The Royal Mint publishes two figures for the base-metal coin. Its 2007 sales page lists 260,856 Brilliant Uncirculated coins sold against an issue limit of 500,000. Its table of crowns struck to circulating standard gives 30,561 for 2007, far below the 1,075,516 of 2005. The following year was the last in that table.

The reverse is by Emma Noble, who later designed the 2013 crown for the 60th anniversary of the Coronation. It shows the rose window of Westminster Abbey, the church where the couple married, with the inscription TVEATVR VNITA DEVS, the dates 1947 and 2007 and the denomination FIVE POUNDS. Check Your Change translates the Latin as may God guard these united.

The obverse departs from the usual single portrait. The proclamation specifies the effigies of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh together, with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG F D PHILIP PRINCEPS. The Royal Mint's list of crown designs credits it to Ian Rank-Broadley.

The cupro-nickel coin has a grained (milled) edge. The platinum, gold and silver coins have a plain edge with the incuse inscription MY STRENGTH AND STAY.
