How many Queen's Beasts completer £5 coins were made?

The Royal Mint's 2021 sales page lists 19,116 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 11,472 in trade packaging, 30,588 in all. These are sales, not a striking figure. The completer outsold both individual beasts dated 2021, the Griffin at 18,995 and the White Greyhound at 17,184.

What is shown on the Queen's Beasts completer coin?

All ten Queen's Beasts arranged in a circle around a portrait of Elizabeth II, with the inscription THE QUEEN'S BEASTS and the date. The Royal Mint says it is the only coin in the collection to show the beasts and the monarch they represent in one design.

Who designed the Queen's Beasts completer £5?

Jody Clark designed both sides. He created every beast in the Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series and also the fifth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II that appears on the obverse, so the completer brings his two bodies of work together on one coin.

Is the Queen's Beasts completer £5 legal tender?

Yes. The royal proclamation makes the cupro-nickel coin legal tender for any amount. It was sold only to collectors, and the Royal Mint notes that banks are not required to accept crowns, so check with your bank before trying to pay one in.

How do I identify the 2021 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – The Queen's Beasts Completer?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

Between 2017 and 2021 the Royal Mint issued a £5 crown for each of The Queen's Beasts, the ten heraldic statues sculpted by James Woodford RA that stood guard outside Westminster Abbey at the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. This coin closed the series by bringing all ten together.

The Royal Mint calls it the only coin in the collection to show the beasts and the monarch they represent in a single design, and its sales page files it under End of Series. The cupro-nickel coin was authorised by a royal proclamation given at Windsor Castle on 10 February 2021, which also covered gold, silver and platinum versions up to ten kilos.

The Brilliant Uncirculated coin came in fold-out packaging on the history of heraldry. The Royal Mint's 2021 sales page lists 19,116 coins and 11,472 in trade packaging, 30,588 in all. That is well ahead of the two individual beasts dated 2021: the Griffin of Edward III sold 18,995 and the White Greyhound of Richmond 17,184.

The proclamation describes the reverse as ten heraldic beasts encircling the Queen's effigy, with the inscription THE QUEEN'S BEASTS and the date. The Mint describes the beasts as a protective circle around the monarch.

Jody Clark designed both sides. He drew each of the beasts for the series, and the obverse carries his fifth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II with ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF 5 POUNDS, so the Queen appears on both faces of the coin. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

With ten small figures around a central portrait, the reverse is full of fine detail. Check the beasts' heads and the portrait for contact marks before buying an unpackaged coin.

In silver, the £5 was struck as a two-ounce coin: a proof (749 sold, according to the Royal Mint) and a 999.9 bullion version whose reverse adds 2OZ FINE SILVER 999.9. Larger gold and silver pieces carry other denominations.

The last two individual beasts were the White Greyhound of Richmond and the Griffin of Edward III.
