History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Elizabeth II – White Greyhound of Richmond. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts crowns took the ten heraldic statues that guarded Westminster Abbey at the 1953 coronation and gave each its own £5 coin. The statues were sculpted by James Woodford RA, and the Mint describes the beasts as ancient symbols of ancestry and power.

The White Greyhound of Richmond, dated 2021, is the ninth coin in the series by the Mint's count. It was followed the same year by the Griffin of Edward III and then by a completer coin bringing all ten beasts together.

The coin was sold as a Brilliant Uncirculated piece in fold-out packaging. The Royal Mint's 2021 sales page lists 11,464 coins and 5,720 more in trade packaging, 17,184 in all. That is the lowest of the three Queen's Beasts crowns on the page, against 18,995 for the Griffin and 30,588 for the completer.

The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a greyhound with the heraldic badge of Richmond, accompanied by the inscription WHITE GREYHOUND OF RICHMOND and the date of the year. The same design was authorised in gold, silver and platinum at a range of sizes.

Jody Clark designed both sides according to the Royal Mint's product page, and its page for the five-ounce gold proof says he captures the greyhound's power and elegance. The obverse carries his fifth definitive portrait of Elizabeth II with ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF 5 POUNDS. The edge is milled.
