What is the Royal Dragon on the £5 coin?

It is one of the ten heraldic stone beasts on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace. The Royal Mint says Henry VII adopted the Royal Dragon after his victory at Bosworth to represent the Tudor dynasty's Welsh ancestry.

How is the Royal Dragon £5 different from the Tudor Dragon £5?

They are separate coins in the same Royal Tudor Beasts series, both designed by David Lawrence. The Tudor Dragon £5 is dated 2024 and the Royal Dragon £5 is dated 2026. The Royal Mint says the statues are very similar, but the Royal Dragon clutches a shield quartering France and England.

How many Royal Dragon £5 coins were made?

The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure for the 2026 Brilliant Uncirculated coin, and its product page states no maximum mintage. The Mint's commemorative coin sales pages currently stop at coins dated 2023.

Is the Royal Dragon £5 legal tender?

Yes, the royal proclamation of November 2025 makes it legal tender for any amount in the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint says the £5 coin is a commemorative issue that does not circulate and that most retailers do not accept it.

How do I identify the 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III (Royal Dragon)?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The Royal Dragon £5 continues the Royal Mint's Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, made in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces. Its subject is one of ten stone beasts that Henry VIII placed on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace; the Mint says the beasts were introduced around 1536, after his marriage to Jane Seymour, as a homage to the Tudor dynasty.

The Royal Dragon had represented both Wales and the Tudor family since the days of Henry VIII's great-grandfather, Owen Tudor. The Mint says Henry VII adopted it after his victory at Bosworth in 1485, combining the Tudor colours of green and white with the dragon's red. It became the official flag of Wales in 1959.

The coin is dated 2026 and was sold to collectors. It was not issued for circulation.

The reverse is David Lawrence's contemporary reimagining of the statue. Lawrence, a sculptor and illustrator with more than 30 years' experience, has designed all ten coins in the collection. The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a depiction of the Royal Dragon with the inscription ROYAL DRAGON and the date.

On the bridge the dragon stands on the right-hand side and grips a shield quartering France and England: three gold fleurs-de-lis on blue and three gold lions on red. The Royal Mint notes it closely resembles the Tudor Dragon, with a fiery tongue, bat-like wings and a four-legged reptilian body. The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

Do not confuse it with the Tudor Dragon £5 of 2024, Lawrence's other dragon for the same series; the date and the ROYAL DRAGON inscription settle it. The Royal Mint has published no mintage or issue limit for the cupro-nickel coin.

On a loose coin, check the dragon and the open field for handling marks. Silver and gold proofs, including a silver proof two-coin set, share the design. A separate Royal Dragon bullion range with a chain-textured background and weight inscriptions is a different design. The coin is legal tender, but the Royal Mint says the £5 coin does not circulate.
