History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Mary Seacole. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Mary Seacole was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1805. During the Crimean War she opened the British Hotel near Balaclava in 1855, planned as a mess table and comfortable quarters for sick and convalescent officers, and in 1857 published her memoir, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands. She died in London in 1881.
The Royal Mint's 2023 £5 was authorised by a proclamation that came into force on 15 June 2023, covering the design in gold, silver, silver piedfort and cupro-nickel. It was sold to collectors and never issued into change.
Sales were modest. The Royal Mint lists 4,727 Brilliant Uncirculated coins in the standard pack and 3,490 in trade packaging, 8,217 in all. That is the lowest total for any 2023-dated £5 design on the Mint's 2023 sales page, if the separate colour-printed coins are set aside, against 15,731 for the Pride of England £5 and 160,078 for the Coronation £5.
The reverse is by Sandra Deiana. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of Mary Seacole set against a background of the Union flag with the inscription MARY SEACOLE.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. There is a neat link here: Jennings is also the sculptor of the Mary Seacole statue unveiled at St Thomas' Hospital in London in 2016.
The cupro-nickel crown has a milled edge. The proclamation gives the precious-metal coins a plain edge with the incuse inscription THE ONE WHO NURSED HER SICK.
