How do I identify the 2023 5 Pounds - Charles III Dame Shirley Bassey?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

Dame Shirley Bassey was born in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, on 8 January 1937, and is known for recording the theme songs of three James Bond films: Goldfinger in 1964, Diamonds Are Forever in 1971 and Moonraker in 1979. The Royal Mint marked her career with a £5 crown in 2023, alongside a range of gold and silver coins.

The coin was authorised by a proclamation that came into force on 18 May 2023. The same proclamation covered a coin for The Police, so the two music crowns share their legal authority.

The Royal Mint sold the crown in two forms. The plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin sold 5,215 in the standard pack, 9,187 in trade packaging and 313 in coin covers, 14,715 in all. The colour coin sold 2,222, the smallest Brilliant Uncirculated £5 line on the Mint's 2023 sales page.

The reverse is by Sue Aperghis. The proclamation describes a depiction of the silhouette of Dame Shirley Bassey with the inscription DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY and the song titles GOLDFINGER, MOONRAKER and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.

The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled, which the proclamation calls a grained edge.

The colour coin uses the same design, with the reverse printed in colour.

Varieties and errors

The colour-printed Brilliant Uncirculated coin is a separate Royal Mint product, not an error. No recognised mint errors are documented for this coin.

Collecting notes

There are two Dame Shirley Bassey entries in this catalogue with the same name. Check the reverse: the plain coin shows the silhouette in the metal of the coin, while the colour coin has printed colour on the reverse. The colour coin sold in much smaller numbers.

Coins in the original Royal Mint pack or coin cover are the best examples; on a loose colour coin, check the printed area for scuffs. The 2oz silver proof sold 267 in 2023.

The coin is legal tender for any amount, but the Royal Mint notes that "while crowns are legal tender, banks are not required to accept them".
