History and design

This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – XVII Commonwealth Games - Scotland. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The 2002 Commonwealth Games Scotland £2 belongs to a set of four coins issued for the XVII Commonwealth Games in Manchester, which the Royal Mint describes as the largest multi-sport event ever hosted in the UK. Each home nation has its own coin. The design is shared and only a small flag changes. One royal proclamation, given on 18 July 2001, authorised all four.

The Royal Mint's figures give 771,750 Scotland coins for circulation, the highest of the four. England had 650,500, Wales 588,500 and Northern Ireland 485,500. Even so, the Scotland coin has the sixth lowest mintage of any circulating £2 in the Mint's published figures, and 13,024,750 standard Technology £2 coins were struck in the same year.

Matthew Bonaccorsi's reverse shows a stylised athlete in motion, holding a banner high in celebration. The upper section of the banner is divided into fine parallel lines suggesting the lanes of a running track or swimming pool. In front of the figure are the inscription XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002 and the value, given as £2 in figures. Behind the figure, a small circular cartouche holds the flag of Scotland: the saltire of St Andrew, a diagonal cross that is white on blue on the real flag.

The edge is milled with the incuse inscription SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP MANCHESTER 2002. The obverse has the fourth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF.
