History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – The Army. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Army £2 is the third coin in the Royal Mint's First World War centenary series, after the Kitchener coin of 2014 and the Royal Navy coin of 2015. Its subject is the Pals Battalions. The Mint explains that the army, traditionally formed of volunteers, encouraged men to enlist alongside friends, neighbours and workmates so that they could serve together.
The Mint links the coin to 1916 in particular. Its account notes the price those communities paid on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 100 years before the coin was issued. The coin was created in association with Imperial War Museums.
The Royal Mint's figures record 9,550,000 struck for circulation. Among commemorative bimetallic £2 coins in those figures only the 2005 Second World War coin is higher, at 10,191,000. The other four commemorative £2 coins of 2016 together total 16,250,000.
The reverse is credited by the Royal Mint to Tim Sharp, and the Mint describes it as an original design by the creative agency Uniform. The proclamation describes a stylised silhouette of the heads of three soldiers, in a manner that refers to the English cubism movement of the war years. The inscription reads THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-1918, with the date 2016.
The edge is milled and reads FOR KING AND COUNTRY in incuse letters.
The obverse carries the fifth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. The reverse has no statement of value, so the obverse legend ends with 2 POUNDS.
