History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – London Underground Train. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Two £2 coins were issued in 2013 for the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, the world's first underground railway, which opened in 1863. A single royal proclamation of 17 October 2012 authorised both. This entry covers the Train coin; its partner shows the Underground roundel.
According to Transport for London, a limited number of each were issued from selected Tube stations in the week of 24 January 2013, ahead of larger quantities entering general circulation later that year. The Royal Mint's figures record 1,690,000 Train coins struck for circulation, against 1,560,000 of the Roundel. Fourteen circulating £2 issues in the Mint's figures have a lower total.
The reverse is by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the design partnership behind the London 2012 Olympic Torch. It shows the front of a Tube train emerging from a tunnel, which the Royal Mint identifies as a 1967 Victoria line train. The inscription 1863 LONDON UNDERGROUND 2013 is set on the tunnel walls around the train, and the Mint says the design uses texture and perspective to suggest movement and light.
The edge is the unusual part. In place of an inscription it is milled and carries an incuse pattern that the proclamation describes as symbolising an Underground line and station tube map. The Royal Mint and Transport for London both say it was inspired by Harry Beck's Tube map.
The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the legend ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF and the denomination TWO POUNDS, which does not appear on the reverse.
