History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Great Fire of London. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Great Fire of London £2 marks 350 years since the fire of 1666. The Royal Mint's account of the coin recalls a city built largely of wood, where a small fire in a Pudding Lane bakery spread until it had engulfed much of the capital and forced residents to flee. Check Your Change dates the start of the fire to 2 September 1666.
The design was authorised with the rest of the 2016 £2 coins by a royal proclamation given on 8 October 2015, which names the First World War centenary, the Great Fire and the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death as the subjects of the year.
The Royal Mint's figures record 1,625,000 struck for circulation. That is the lowest of the six £2 coins the Mint lists for 2016, below even the Britannia definitive at 2,925,000, and thirteen circulating £2 coins of any year have a lower total.
The reverse is by Aaron West, a member of the Royal Mint's design team. The proclamation describes it as a view across the River Thames of the City of London in flames, with boats fleeing the burning city. The Mint says West took the viewpoint of a Londoner seeking refuge on the river. The inscription reads 1666 THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON 2016.
The edge is milled, with THE WHOLE CITY IN DREADFUL FLAMES in incuse letters.
The obverse carries the fifth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. The proclamation allowed two obverse legends for the 2016 coins, and this one uses the form without a denomination: ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF. Neither side of the coin states its value.
