History and design
This is a collector version of the 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Brunel Achievements. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Two £2 coins dated 2006 mark 200 years since the birth of the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 to 1859). One carries his portrait. This one, usually called the Brunel Achievements or Paddington Station £2, stands for his work.
A single royal proclamation set out both designs and provided for each in cupro-nickel and nickel-brass, in silver, as a silver piedfort and in gold. It made the base-metal coin current and legal tender throughout the United Kingdom.
The Royal Mint's figures record 7,452,250 of this design struck for circulation, against 7,928,250 for the portrait coin. Among the 35 commemorative £2 issues with a figure in the Mint's data, only six have a higher total, so this is a plentiful coin.
The reverse is by Robert Evans. It shows a section of the roof of Paddington Station, with the date 2006 above, the name BRUNEL to the right and the denomination TWO POUNDS below. The Royal Mint describes Paddington as a key terminus of the Great Western Railway, where Brunel was Chief Engineer, and points to its iron-and-glass roof.
The edge is milled and carries the incuse inscription SO MANY IRONS IN THE FIRE. The obverse has the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF. The coin has a nickel-brass outer ring and a cupro-nickel centre.
